Freelance Forge

Clients, time, expenses and invoices — with UK VAT, IR35 and late-payment rules built in as a switchable profile, never baked in.

Note: This was written for MY purposes in conjunction with an accountant. Any suggestions to make it better or add features, let me know

Everything a freelance developer needs to run the business side

Time tracking

A start/stop timer plus manual entry, with a week-by-week view. Attributed automatically if more than one person logs time.

Expenses

Categorised to line up with UK Self Assessment expense boxes, with receipt uploads straight into your media library.

Invoicing

Sequential numbering, VAT handling, one-click email delivery, and draft → sent → paid status tracking.

Reports

Profit and loss by period, income by client, and CSV export shaped for handing straight to an accountant.

UK tax rules, without the guesswork – or the lock-in

Switch on the UK tax profile (the default) and every screen gains:

  • Rolling 12-month VAT turnover tracking against your registration threshold, with a warning as you approach it
  • IR35 status and assessment notes on every contract
  • A statutory late-payment interest calculator – under the Late Payment of Commercial Debts (Interest) Act 1998 – shown as information only, never applied automatically

Not from the UK, or don’t want any of this? Switch the tax profile to “None / other” and every UK-specific feature disappears – clients, contracts, time, expenses and invoicing keep working exactly the same.

Get paid on time, without the awkward chasing

  • A daily digest email when invoices are due soon or overdue – sent to you, never to a client, unless you choose to act on it
  • One-click “send payment reminder” on any overdue invoice
  • “Generate follow-up invoice” pre-fills the statutory interest and compensation you’re legally entitled to charge, ready for you to review before it’s created

Nothing here ever contacts a client automatically. Every email is a deliberate click, not a background job acting on your behalf.

No external service

No subscription, no third-party API, no telemetry. Every record lives in your own WordPress database.

Built for translation

Every string is translation-ready, and money is stored as a currency code plus an integer amount, never an assumed symbol.

Your data, exportable anytime

One click exports everything as JSON, or invoices and expenses as CSV – no lock-in if you ever move on.

Frequently asked questions

Is this tax advice?

No. Figures like the VAT rate, VAT threshold, and the Bank of England base rate used for late-payment interest are settings you enter and are responsible for keeping current – the plugin never assumes or looks them up for you. Check gov.uk or an accountant.

Does this work outside the UK?

Yes. Set the tax profile to “None / other” in Settings and every UK-specific feature (VAT, IR35, late-payment interest) is hidden. Clients, contracts, time tracking, expenses and invoicing are not UK-specific and work either way.

Where does my data go?

Nowhere but your own database. There’s no external API call, tracking, or telemetry anywhere in the plugin.

What happens to my data if I delete the plugin?

Nothing, by default – deleting the plugin leaves your data in the database untouched. Data is only removed if you explicitly tick “Delete all data on uninstall” in Settings first.
